Hunter Education Indoor Shooting Range

The Hunter Education Building is an indoor pistol range designed for year-round operation in an arctic environment. The facility includes 10 shooting lanes accommodating pistols from .22 rimfire up to .44 Magnum, a separate electronic range, a viewing lobby, restrooms, a formal classroom, and support spaces for firearm and ammunition storage. AMC Engineers received a National ASHRAE Technology Award for this project. The buildup rate of lead particulate and combustion gases was modeled and maintained below their allowable limits through HEPA filtration and “feed and bleed” dilution of the pistol range’s recirculating air stream, allowing the range to operate economically with an outdoor design temperature of -55°F (-48°C). This was the first AMC Engineers project to incorporate variable-speed drive fan motors.
